It's a social thing. It's Saturday night at the local watering hole and for the third time in the last half hour my friend reaches into his wallet. I keeping thinking that maybe he's finally going to breakdown and buy a round for the gang. Wrong ! Out comes that white piece of paper as once again he takes a look and shakes his head.
That piece of paper is a Proline ticket with six games and a payout of just over $500.00 and so far my friend has the first five games right. Now all of us sitting around the table guzzling down the draft know that the last game Johnny needs is Edmonton to beat Colorado, as we have each had the ticket in our hands a couple of times. For some reason Johnny keeps checking that ticket as if the selections on his ticket are going to change. We have all passed our tickets around and laughed at each other for some of our selections while agreeing that some teams suck, on this night the team that sucked was St. Louis because they lost in overtime. Socializing, looking at each others tickets and talking about the big score we would have had if so and so had won or tied is another reason why Canadians play Sport Select. Those tickets from the lottery machine, the odds in the newspaper, the visit with guy at the corner store to discuss who he is playing and who you are playing and of course the bull sessions as the sports bar as you watch the your games unfold are all part of the attraction of Sports Lotteries. You just can't get these social aspects playing offshore, even though the odds are stacked against with the lotteries parlay play system. Colorado is all over the Oilers but Tommy Salo stands on his head and Edmonton wins 1-0. Johnny wins $524.72. I know the payout to the exact cent because once again he checks his ticket and passes it around so we can all have a look and verify that it's a winner
Then the real shock, he orders a couple more jugs and he actually pays for them !
More on Proline Ties...
Last week I discussed Proline ties for NHL games. In Ontario ties should seriously be considered as part of your strategy, as so far this season almost 27 per cent of the games have gone into overtime. With the Ontario ties paying up to 4.0 for a game ending tied after three periods, there is value in playing the ties. Consider the following strategy: Choose 1 key game. This should be a selection that based on your analysis has a very good chance of winning. The payout odds for your key should be at least 1.30. Now choose from the list of game selections that have a good possibility of going into overtime. Let say for this example you choose 5 games to tie. The idea is to make 10 tickets each with 3 games and with everyone of them using your key game. Then from the 5 possible ties you have selected, group them into pairs and you will end up with 10 pairs. Each pair goes with the key on you have 10 tickets. If each of the ties is paying 4.0 and your key pays 1.5 then if you end up with just 2 ties…assuming your key wins…then you will have a return of 24 to 1 for just one winning ticket. If you spend $2.00 on each of your tickets then your investment would be $20.00, but your return would be $48.00. If you decide to use 6 ties then you have 15 pairs of ties and if you have 7 ties then you have 21 pairs of ties. Imagine the return if you can get 3 or 4 ties in one night and this has happened many times this season. In the rest of the Canada, Proline ties are based on the final score and so far this season around 14 per cent of the games have ended in ties. I would therefore recommend rarely using NHL ties. There are those guys who like to pick 3 or 4 ties a night as they go for the big score, but your more likely to end up going broke with that kind of strategy. I do suggest playing tie to offset the third and final game on that 3 game ticket . A good example is the late game of Hockey Night in Canada's doubleheader. If you win on your two early games, it's nice to guaranteed some sort of return from the final game no matter what the outcome.
Now this strategy is only for three game tickets and not recommend for four or more game ticket. If you are spending $20.00 that night. Wager $15.00 on your three best picks, wager $3.00 using a tie for your final game and $2.00 on a ticket with the final game being the team you actually want to lose. Again this way when you get your first two games correct, you are assured of getting some money from your final game. Horse bettors can relate to this as often when buying a win 3, or win 4 ticket, a horse player will "board a leg", meaning he will take every horse in one race to increase his overall chances of winning.
Every game played in the NHL can end up in a tie even if one team looks that much better than their opponent. Follow the standings and play the teams that are have more of their games end in ties. This season Florida is one of those teams. Also ties are more likely to occur in games with low totals from less offensive and more defensive minded clubs. Use statistics to your advantage and also check the posted Vegas lines as well, they offer strong clues as to which games will be low scoring and the fewer goals the more chance for a tie. Non-conference games are not usually good tie selections, as teams are less concerned if they lose, so they go after the extra point in OT. And of course more ties occur late in the season, as teams grab every point they can get in their efforts to make playoffs. It's playoff type hockey in March.
Next week... Proline ties in the NFL , MLB and NBA
Rotation of the week:
Last week I went 2 for 4 so no return.
For Saturday December 14th.
Game 1 Take Montreal to beat Boston
Game 2 Take Philadelphia to beat Buffalo
Game 3 Take St Louis to beat Atlanta
Game 4 Take Vancouver to beat Edmonton
This should be done in a 3 out of 4 rotation..In other words you will have 4 tickets each with 3 games on them.. 123 , 124 , 134 , 234 and then 1 ticket with all 4 selections 1234.
In total you will have 5 tickets. I am taking these teams to win on the Proline by 1 goal.
This can be played in all provinces.
We will wager $10.00 on each ticket and have the results here next week.
