NFL Record: Best Bets 2-1, Regular Picks 3-3
Most weeks we provide our NFL best bet of the week and an additional two to three picks that we believe offer some betting value. Last season our top play crushed the book with an incredible 15 point spread covers from 21 selections. Good for a 71.4 winning percent. While it will be difficult to improve on that record, we'll do our best to help our readers in their quest of a profitable football handicapping season.
Line: Jets -1
New York tasted defeat for the first time in '09, dropping a 24-10 decision to New Orleans. Miami won their first game of the season last week, crushing Buffalo 38-10.
The Jets are averaging only 19 points-per-game as QB Mark Sanchez has been decent but not spectacular. He had a very poor game against the Saints (4 TOs) but that will happen to a rookie QB from time to time. New York needs to get their ground game going to take the pressure off of Sanchez but Miami is allowing only 61 yards per game on the ground. However, the Dolphins have been susceptible through the air. Newly-acquired WR Braylon Edwards is slated to start in this game and his speed will allow Sanchez to test the secondary deep. The Dolphins had six sacks last week and that was without OLB Joey Porter (check status). Then again, that was against the leaky Buffalo O-line. The Jets have a much better line and Sanchez should have time to make plays. He'll definitely have a better game if RBs Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are able to move the chains with consistency.
The Chad Henne Era has begun in Miami and he was under center for a blowout win in his first start. He wasn't a big factor in the outcome as it was the running game (250 yards) that decimated the Bills defense. Miami is averaging 184 yards-per-game as RBs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are both averaging 5+ yards per rush. The Jets are no pushover vs. the run and we like their front seven in this matchup. They can afford to load up vs. the run and force Henne to the air more than the Dolphins would like. New York has only four sacks this year but has forced numerous quick throws by opposing QBs. Despite their loss last week, the Jets held the Saints' offense to 10 points and that was with four TOs committed by their offense. CB Darrelle Revis is becoming a top cover corner and don't look for Henne to be completing many passes to his side.
New York has been totally dominant in this matchup, going 8-2 SU/8-1-1 ATS in the last 10 encounters. They are also 6-0 ATS in their last six visits. We think their defense will continue their impressive ways against an offense that has trouble moving the ball through the air. We also feel Sanchez will bounce back and do enough to aid the defense to a win.
