ODDS TO WIN THE AFC East
In case you didn't know, the Patriots finished 16-0 to win the division by an astounding nine games. Buffalo cruised into 2nd with a 7-9 record despite several devastating injuries. NY won six fewer games in '07 to finish 4-12 while Miami was a nightmarish 1-15.
New England won them all last season until they faced a NY Giants front four that they had no answer for. They return virtually intact on offense but their secondary took a hit in FA. The defense is another year older but unlike their horrendous '07 draft, they restocked with players that actually have a chance to make the team and see the field. Tom Brady has a foot injury and Matt Cassel hasn't shown in the preseason that he can keep the offensive engine humming.
The Jets traded for an old QB named Brett Favre and he should certainly help. They also signed two key veterans for an O-line that desperately needed them. They also added players for the front seven and are getting close to playing the 3-4 defense with players actually suited for it.
The Bills are healthy again and the Trent Edwards Era has begun. But seriously, this offense will go as far as Marshawn Lynch can take it. They added some key vets (Marcus Stroud and Kawika Mitchell) to shore up a porous run defense. They are really counting on rookie WR James Hardy to help the red zone offense, quite a burden for a first-year player.
Miami hired Bill Parcells to reverse the sagging fortunes of a once-proud franchise. He didn't waste any time either, cutting several players and trading the team's best player (Jason Taylor). He signed several vets and used the No.1 overall pick in the draft to select LT Jake Long. They will be better (and Chad Pennington is better than they had) but are no threat right now.
No division is more slanted than this one. New England is unchallenged and while the Jets are better with Favre, we can't recommend any team in this division based on the Pats' overwhelming superiority in talent.
